Tembec is reopening its pulp mill in Chetwynd, British Columbia on January 1st, 2010.
Tembec is reopening the mill because of the strong demand in the Asian markets. The mill was idled on February 2nd putting 180 out of work.
Before the mill resumes production, its expected that Tembec will try to work out a new labor agreement with its workers.

What is the status of the contract talks. Will there be a 40 reduction like at Pine Falls?

I'd be surprised if Tembec wasn't looking for cuts to wages and benefits in the 35% range. Tembec, and other Forestry companies, appear to be attempting to set new industry bargaining patterns.

40 per cent less isn't that alot to ask with no guareentee to run? Is it a race to the bottom?

The union has signed a memorandum of agreement with Tembec, we didn't take a roll back, we did get some money, and some benefits. We will be voting to accept this proposal on the 11th at 7pm.\
For those out there getting ready to bargain, Tembec will present an agreement that is longer term, they will ask for a rollback, and 0% increases. They even said they will be trying to remove the sunday premium and any shift differentials. We lucked out this session and managed to keep them with no increases. However we were told that in the next bargain Tembec will try to remove them

;D the membership voted tonight with 88% in favour of the memorandum of agreement present on December 9th. This will make way for management to begin calling members back starting Monday. If their are any E/I, Millwrights, or Steamers out there looking for work please tell them to apply.

Do you think many of the 180 have left? If so how many people do you think they might be hiring? I heard maybe 40.

We have had our own guys on site this week, however your right we do have a contractor on site because we need a 2nd class ticket- if you know of any of our members that hold a 2nd class tell them to phone Brenda- hell those with thirds phone in too. We need these tickets so we can get the Steam Plant running, or else there will be contractors in there, cause our guys won't get the tickets, and those that will leave too fast. And if your going to use my name publicly then phone me.
