Concerning the 8 weeks severance for Cranbrook Planer employees.
Cranbrook Planer representatives and the union met with the company on Sept 28. Jeen-Luc Carriere was very explicit on telling the Cranbrook Planer employees the company would not pay severance. When pointed out that Tom Kirk and Dennis Rounsville had assured Cranbrook employees there would be severance when they were finished, Jean Luc said where is this in writing. So, everyone please take it from a Tembec executive that their word is not good for anything. Everything with this company must be in writing.
Tom Kirk then called for a caucus. After coming back from the caucus Jean-Luc informed us they would offer 8 weeks in accord with the Employment Standards Act of BC. It is our opinion that Tom Kirk pointed out that the company will be compelled by law to pay the 8 weeks. After reviewing the Employment Standards Act we also feel that the company will have an obligation under law.
The Employees have sent another offer to the company to resolve the severance issue. Failing that, a meeting with Dennis Rounsville will be demanded and further action will be taken against the company.
Tembec is a corporate bully and it is time we have some solidarity in standing up to this bully. We need not just union solidarity but solidarity amongst all who have been affected by Tembec's practices. Workers, suppliers and contractors.

It's rumoured that Tembec is going to truck Black and Green Liquor to Skookumchuck from Marathon Ontario for disposal. This is so they won't have any environmental issues at Marathon Pulp, which they deny owning.

I heard the other day that there is talk about the company proposing to the Union a new alternate shift schedule. It is as Follow
Production employees will be working a 4 on 4 off steady day shift , maintenance will be 4 on 4 off steady graveyards Switching every 3 months back and forth from days to graveyards.
They want to do this to reduce costs of maintenance and to keep a steadier flow of Chips to the Pulp mill and to eliminate the need for the watchmen on the weekend
Also every three months at switch time they will be doing a mini-shut down at the mill to do major maintenance. So that means every 3 months you will be getting 12 days off in a row.
