This week the majority of the Cranbrook Planer employees received termination letters from Tembec. These terminations have been done with none of the promised severance pay. Individual employees have started the complaint process for severance through the Employment Standards Act. As well, the union is proceeding with grievance for severance for terminated workers. Grievance will also be filed for unpaid holiday pay.
John Valley continues with the Tembec lies that employees were offered other employment opportunities. Several people did go to work in mills in other towns but several were told they were unsuitable or the company has refused to sign transfers while hiring new people off the street. It must also be remembered that while the Cranbrook Planer was winding down company officials told us we would receive our severance when we were finished with work. They told us severance not other jobs in other mill locations. It must also be pointed out that if we were to go to another Tembec operation we do not take our seniority. John Valley says we were provided other job oppurtunities and I can say, as a Cranbrook employee, that the company did not contact me with any job opportunities but they were sure able to contact me to notify me I was terminated.
