The United Steelworkers has reached a tentative agreement with CanadianForest Products.
Despite the fact the forest industry has experienced the worst financial crisis in history, the United Steelworkers and Canadian Forest Products have crafted a unique and innovative agreement that provides for unprecedented seniority protection, severance pay protection, and improvements in severance language which includes new provisions protecting members in the event of partial closures.
Steelworker members will invest in their operations based on a model that provides for complete return on the investment while maintaining our members take home pay with the additional potential for profit sharing.
Details will be released once the BC Interior Bargaining Committee has had an opportunity to first discuss the tentative agreement with their members.
This tentative agreement will form the pattern for the remaining employers in the BC Interior.

The Cranbrook Planer severance issue is still supposedly on the table for the Southern Interior negotiations. Let's hope the union sticks to their position on this. Could be interesting now that they have a pattern to negotiate from with Tembec holding up the process because of their attempts to cheat the Cranbrook workers.
