As part of its cost cutting initiatives press release today, Tembec announced that it has permanently closed its hardwood sawmill in Mattawa, Ontario.
The sawmill, which has been idled since July, 2008, had employed 59 people.
Tembec is blaming the closing on the poor market conditions and the financial performance of the mill.

In my opinion, mill closures and lay-offs are a result of one thing only....Poor Market Conditions. To add that financial performance of a mill counts, is not realistic in today's downward economic spiral. Workers do their best to keep things running as efficiently as possible. It is up to management to make the performance stellar. Despite the foreseen downward slide of Tembec, our company paid out handsome bonuses to the top brass last year. So when we see the stock market going down and down, it isn't workers performance that is the issue, it is the economic system that is squeezing us all. And we won't get any bonus.

The Mattawa employees performed their best right up to the shut down and can keep their heads up. They fought hard.. for this small community of approx 2000-3000, 59 jobs was only what was left. It had been over 100 before the slow down of the market and countervailing duties etc (2-3years). Lets remember that these last 59 had many many years of service. many with over 30 years! Production records were broken, prod costs at an all time low with 30 + year service employees performing very physical labour. Let's hope something positive happens for these employees and the community. Best of luck to you all.
